Fence Post Spacing Calculator — FAQ

What spacing is best for wooden fences?
6–8 feet is typical. Treated lumber often allows 8 ft; check local codes.
Do metal posts allow wider spacing?
Yes. Metal posts can often be spaced 8–10 ft apart with appropriate rails.
How deep should fence posts be set?
1/3 of post above ground should be underground — e.g. 6-ft post needs 2 ft in ground.

How Many Fence Posts Do I Need?

Number of posts is fence length divided by spacing, plus one for the end. For 100 ft at 8 ft spacing: 100 ÷ 8 = 12.5, floor = 12, plus 1 = 13 posts. The actual spacing between posts adjusts slightly to fit the length.

6–8 ft spacing is typical for wood; metal posts can go 8–10 ft. Check local codes. Buy 1–2 extra for corners and gates. Use our Concrete Calculator for post hole concrete.
