Dog Feeding Calculator

Estimate how many calories your dog needs per day. We use resting energy requirement (RER) = 70 × weight(kg)^0.75, then multiply by a factor for life stage: puppy 2–3, adult 1.6, senior 1.2.

Enter your dog's weight in kilograms.

FAQ

What is RER?
Resting energy requirement — calories needed at rest. Formula 70 × weight(kg)^0.75 is commonly used for dogs.
Why different factors for puppy vs adult?
Puppies need more calories per pound for growth (often 2–3× RER). Adults use about 1.6× RER; seniors often 1.2×.
How do I convert pounds to kg?
Divide weight in pounds by 2.205 to get kilograms.
Should I feed exactly this many calories?
This is an estimate. Adjust for body condition, breed, and your vet's advice. Portion by the food's kcal/cup or per can.

How Many Calories Does My Dog Need?

Dog calorie needs are often estimated from body weight using resting energy requirement (RER): 70 × weight in kilograms to the power of 0.75. That's the base. Then a multiplier is applied for life stage: puppies need more for growth (typically 2.0–3.0× RER), adult maintenance is often around 1.6× RER, and seniors may need less (e.g. 1.2×).

These are starting points. Individual dogs vary by breed, activity, and metabolism. Overweight or sedentary dogs might need less; working or very active dogs more. Use the result to compare with your food's calorie content (kcal per cup or per can) and adjust portions. Always consider your vet's guidance, especially for puppies, seniors, or health issues.
