1/2 inch is standard for walls. 5/8 inch for ceilings (reduces sag) and fire-rated applications.
How much extra drywall should I buy for waste?
Add 10–15% for cuts, breakage, and odd sizes.
Can I mix different sheet sizes in one room?
Yes, but standard 4×8 or 4×12 sheets are easiest. Minimize seams when possible.

How Many Drywall Sheets Do I Need?

Drywall sheets needed equals total surface area divided by the area of one sheet. A standard 4×8 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft. Measure all walls and ceilings, add them up, then divide by 32 (or by your sheet size). Add 10–15% for waste from cuts and breakage.

Use 4×12 ft sheets (48 sq ft) for fewer seams on long walls. 5/8 inch is often recommended for ceilings to reduce sag. Check local codes for fire-rated applications.
