Body Fat Percentage Calculator — FAQ
- Do I need calipers?
- No. Navy method uses tape measure: waist, neck, and (women) hip.
- How often should I track body fat?
- Monthly is enough. Daily fluctuation is normal.
- Can body fat percentage go too low?
- Yes. Essential fat is ~3–5% men, ~10–13% women. Below that risks health.
How to Estimate Body Fat Percentage
The Navy method uses circumference measurements: waist, neck, and (for women) hip. These are plugged into empirical formulas that correlate with body fat. No calipers are needed — just a flexible tape measure. Accuracy is typically within a few percentage points.
Measure at the same time of day (e.g. morning, before eating) for consistency. Waist should be around the navel; neck below the larynx; hip at the widest part. Track trends over time rather than a single reading.
